Michael Hillert – Reflections, Experiences, and Writing Projects

After 24 years as mayor of the municipality of Dettingen an der Erms, I have entered retirement.

On this website, I write about local democracy, public life, municipal administration, local councils, the personal pressures of office, and what makes being a mayor so rewarding—and what it can cost.

I also pursue other writing projects, ranging from history to personal experiences and questions about society.

The series “Das schönste Amt – und sein Preis” (“The Best Job – and Its Price”) is where I began. It is neither a catalogue of achievements nor a settling of scores, but an attempt to make sense of my experiences and share what I have learned.

This website is gradually becoming bilingual, with English versions added step by step.
